Would your business be prepared for a reputational disaster?


Hey Reader,

This week, a situation out of Charlotte made headlines and sent shockwaves through the local business community. A well known brewery found itself at the center of a serious scandal tied directly to its ownership. Within hours, other businesses publicly cut ties, customers walked, and trust evaporated.

It was swift. It was decisive. It was correct.

This is the part every business owner needs to sit with.

When someone associated with your business does real harm, speed matters. Silence costs you credibility. Hesitation creates suspicion. Distance protects your brand.

Every business needs a reputation response plan. Not a vague idea. A written, practiced, ready to execute plan.

Here are the non-negotiables:

  • Know who speaks for the company and how quickly they speak.
  • Know what lines trigger immediate separation from a partner, vendor, or collaborator.
  • Know how you will communicate accountability without defensiveness or excuses.
  • Know what financial runway you need if revenue drops overnight.

Reputation recovery requires time, money, and humility. It demands consistency and transparency over the long haul. And even then, survival depends on whether the community believes the business took responsibility early and acted decisively.

There's also a hard truth here. When the harm comes from the top, leadership has to change. Full stop. No rebrand will fix a credibility problem rooted in ownership. Stepping down becomes a business decision, not a personal one.

This situation is painful to watch. This brewery is a beloved community staple in the Charlotte area and around North Carolina. But, it also delivers a clear message for founders, partners, and executives everywhere.

Your brand carries your values whether you manage them or not. Preparation protects you when the pressure hits. Integrity determines whether your business earns a second chance.
